Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital

Hotels near Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital, Swords, Ireland .

Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the Republic of Ireland. When Sir Richard Martin’s widowed wife died in the year 1907, she left her house to the Religious Sisters of Charity in order to provide a school for the poor children of the neighbourhood. But since it was situated in a sparsely populated area, not too many of children were admitted. So the sisters began using this house as a convalescent home and a training school for the nursery nurses. Many children suffering from rickets, malnutrition and tuberculosis started occupying it. This house was then opened as a school for children in the year 1923.

Slowly the number of beds started to increase followed by the addition of a physiotherapy department and X-ray department and the building was eventually transformed into an orthopaedic hospital.

Today, Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is a renowned and major orthopaedic hospital and also provides services to the other hospitals in the region like Mater Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital, Central Remedial Clinic, Beaumont Hospital, James Connolly Memorial Hospital.
