Cardiff Bay is the area created by the Cardiff Barrage in South Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The regeneration of Cardiff Bay is now commonly regarded as one of the most successful regeneration projects in the UK.
Earlier known as Cardiff Docks, it was the world's largest coal exporting port. Today it is also Europe's largest waterfront development and it has a wealth of leisure activities available both on and off the water.
Cardiff Bay provides various attractions such as the Craft in the Bay, the Techniquest Science Discovery Centre - ideal for all the family, the Butetown History and Arts Centre, the Welsh Assembly at the Pierhead and many more. The Atlantic Wharf Leisure Village provides great options for family entertainment.
Cardiff Bay is served by the Cardiff Bay railway station; the station is northeast of Mermaid Quay and is served by shuttle services to Cardiff Queen Street railway station. There are also various bus services that operate to the bay.
Cardiff Bay also includes a cycle hire system introduced in September 2009. This is similar to those in other cities, there are 70 bikes available at 35 hire points around the south and center of the city.
It is possible for visitors to Cardiff Bay to walk to the barrage and across to Penarth Head, with the opening of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Coast Path from the Inner Harbour to the barrage. This new route provides a very safe pedestrian and cycle route with direct access to and from the Inner Harbour to the city and beyond.
