Cardiff Castle is a Victorian architecture Gothic revival mansion, medieval castle, transformed from a Norman keep erected over a Roman fort in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Cardiff Castle is one of Wales' most important heritage attractions; it is also a place of international significance. During its long history of 2000 years, Cardiff Castle has been a Norman stronghold, a Roman Garrison and a Gothic fairytale fantasy in Victorian times.
The interior of the Castle contains some excellent rooms, with ornate designs. The Chaucer Rooms, the Winter & Summer smoking rooms, the Arab Room, the Roof Garden, the Lord Bute’s Bedroom, etc. reflect Burges’ excellent skill as an architect. Burges also created a suite of rooms in unique gothic style that till today cannot be found in any other castle. He used his special team of Crace, Nicholls and Lonsdale to bring about some amazing designing, decoration and furnishing of the apartments in Cardiff Castle.
The castle has also been the stage for numerous rock concerts and performances. In 1947, with the Bute South Wales estates been sold, the castle, and the surrounding park, was gifted to the City of Cardiff by the fifth Marquis. Cardiff Castle is now a popular tourist attraction, in addition to the ruins of the old castle and the Victorian reconstruction, there is also a regimental museum. It sits in the expansive grounds of Bute Park.
Cardiff Castle is open every day except on the 25th and the 26th of December and the 1st of January. From March to October the castle is open from 9am to 6pm and from November to February 9am to 5pm.
