Just outside of the Tonto National Forest, off of Cave Creek Road, the Carefree Sundial is the third largest sundial in the Western Hemisphere. Erected in 1959, the steel framed sundial is coated in anodized copper, and measures 90 feet in diameter. At its tallest point, the sundial measures 35 feet high, and extends 72 feet long.

The numerals on the ground at the Carefree Sundial are fashioned in mosaic, in a pattern that almost resembles snakeskin, reminiscent of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, native to the area. The Carefree Sundial is located in the center of Carefree, adjacent to the Post Office.
