Carlingford Castle, also known as King John's Castle, is situated in the town of Carlingford, in County Louth, in Ireland. Carlingford Castle sits atop a rocky outcrop by the shore that overlooks the harbor. Carlingford Castle is commonly called King John's Castle as it is supposed that King John stayed here for 3 days in 1210.
Carlingford Castle was built in the late 12th century by the Norman knight Hugh de Lacy. It was the first fortified stone Castle in Carlingford. The castles of Carlingford and Greencastle, on the other side of the mouth of Carlingford Lough, at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, gave the Normans total control over the entrance to the lough.
The original castle was made up of an enclosed courtyard with two rectangular towers situated at the entrance and a double-storey building within. In 1261the eastern half of the castle was added which included a number of rooms and a magnificent hall. There were also quite a number of alterations that was made to the castle over the following centuries.
Today Carlingford Castle is no longer in use for anything. The interior of the castle cannot be visited because of the danger of falling masonry. However, you can walk around the castle freely and enjoy the surrounding views. The town of Carlingford Castle is a popular spot for tourists, there are also two more castles in the vicinity.
