The Cathedral in Carlow was built by Thomas Cobden. The Cathedral’s most outstanding feature is the 150 feet tall tower and lantern, which was inspired by the Beftroi Tower in Bruges, Belgium. Another popular attraction is the sculptured memorial by John Hogan to James Doyle, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, campaigner for Catholic emancipation, who was also the driving force behind the construction of the cathedral itself.
In March 1828 the foundation stone of the Cathedral was laid by the Diocese’s most well known Bishop, James Doyle, popularly known as J.K.L., the initials he used as his signature referring to James of Kildare and Leighlin. The Cathedral was designed by Thomas Cobden, the noted 19th century architect who also designed Duckett’s Grove.
The Cathedral was completed in 1833 and is built on the site of an earlier church; if you look closely as the church foundation you will see where parts of the old church have been incorporated into the Cathedral. Local material were used in the construction, the stone coming from a quarry on the Tullow Road, the white granite was provided by Colonel Bruen from his Graiguenaspidogue quarry and oak timbers from his forests at Oak Park. On the 1st of December 1833 the Cathedral was completed and dedicated by Dr. Doyle. The total cost of the construction amounted to £9,000.
