The Courthouse of Carlow is said to be one among the most imposing and impressive public buildings in the Irish county of Carlow. It was built in the style of the “Greek Revialist” architecture and was designed by William Morrison, a popular architect during the 1820s. The construction of the building was completed in the year 1834 on the site of an old quarry. Ashlar granite was used for the construction of this court house (an expensive and rarely used material). The building has a central block that is screened by the portico with eight ionic columns that are set above the steps.

The design incorporates plenty of natural light, making it an unusual example of 'justice architecture'. During the 1990s the building started showing signs of age and was found to contain many building defects. Work progressed slowly while key decisions were made about how to refurbish the structure while maintaining the original features.
