A visit to the Carmel Mission, or the San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo Mission, in Carmel-By-the-Sea, California, is a trip into history by way of this Roman Catholic Mission church. It is named on the National Registry of Historic Places, and is a US National Historic Landmark. Once the Alta California missions’ headquarters, the mission was first established on June 3, 1770. When functioning as a mission, Esselen and Ohlone Native Americans of the area were taken in and trained in trades like plowing, cattle herding, and blacksmithing.

Today, the church holds mass regularly throughout the week (get a full schedule at http://www.carmelmission.org/), and hosts concerts, art exhibits, lectures, and other community events. Additionally, the grounds are home to the Junipero Serra Elementary School, and a museum and gift shop- open to the public from 9:30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 10:30am to 5pm on Sundays. Museum admissions are $6.50 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children 7 and up, and free for guests under 6.
