Everyone loves a good party. In Mainz, Germany the party for Carnival remains one of the oldest and largest spring pre-Lenten celebrations in Germany, aside from Cologne. It is no wonder the town would place their famous Carnival party in a museum so that travelers can experience Mainz Carnival even if their visit does not fall in spring.

The Carnival Museum Mainz is relatively new to the town. It opened in 2004 to showcase an impressive 160 years of pre-Lenten Carnival history. Displays include giant heads called Schwelkoepp worn during Carnival, jesters' caps, scepters, and many more extravagant costumes. The Carnival Museum can easily be found in the historic Supply Depot building near Romertor, the Roman gate of the city.

After the party displays at the Carnival Museum, visitors may want to visit a more serious museum like the nearby Gutenberg Museum. The museum features everything about the infamous inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg.
