Puerto Rico has long been a popular tourist destination for Americans, but there's more to be seen there than the usual resorts and cities that, in the high season, quickly become madhouses of visitors. One of the more relaxing and emerging spots that's become popular with travelers looking to explore beyond the beaten path is the pueblo of Carolina.

Once home to a dizzying amount of sugar production, Carolina is located in the northeastern corner of Puerto Rico, and is the fourth largest city there. Traditionally known as an industrial center, there are a surprising amount of spots to relax that, though they are a short drive from the city's bustling infrastructure, would never lead you to believe that a bustling metropolis with many active factories was so close to such scenic and peaceful areas.

Founded in 1816, Carolina is known for being the home of the tallest man in Puerto Rico, and being a city that, in the olden days, was known to settle its disputes with duels before court cases. Now, visitors interested in history can take a look at The Buena Vista Ruins, where traces of more ancient times remain. Other popular attractions for visitors include a number of beaches, like Carolina Beach and Pinones Beach, as well as Julia de Burgos Park and Grande de Loiza River. The city hosts a number of craft fairs throughout the year, so travelers interested in artisan crafts and homemade goods would do well to plan their trips accordingly.

The busiest tourist district of town is over by the beach area, and some of the most popular hotels are The Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel, Spa, and Casino and the bustling El San Juan Resort.
