The Carolina Theater is an important venue for events, concerts, symphonies and plays in the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. The theatre was built in 1926 and was originally called the Durham Auditorium and was renamed in the 1930s when it began showing films. It was constructed in the Beaux-Arts style by the Washington, D.C. architectural firm of Milburn & Heister. The theatre consists of a main stage, called Fletcher Hall, which seats 1,014 and has two balconies. There are also two cinema screens, and a ballroom. Recurring events featured at the Carolina Theatre include the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Retrofantasma film series, the Escapism Film Festival, the Nevermore film festival, and the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. There are also regular art house film cycles. The Durham Symphony plays on a monthly basis. Jewel and David Cross have also given recitals. The box office is open from 2pm to 6pm and two hours before show times. There are many hotels close to the theater in downtown Greensboro, including the Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and the Hyatt Place.
