Situated on the border between North and South Carolina, the 112 acre theme park known as Carowinds was originally inspired by a visit to Disneyland. Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall led the effort to create the park, in part to facilitate more camaraderie between the two states. After four years of planning, and $30 million, the park was opened in 1973. The 1973 oil crisis greatly affected park ticket sales, and eventually low profits forced the independent Carowind Corporation to sell the park to Taft Broadcasting Company. It was then sold to Paramount Communications in 1995, and became another park.

Today, the park includes 12 roller coasters amongst its more than 50 rides, shows, ans attractions. Regular daytime admission is $36.99 for people ages 3-61. Hours vary, but run generally from 11 am to 6 pm.
