Hotels near Carter Observatory, Wellington, New Zealand .

The Carter Observatory is located on top of the Botanic Gardens in Wellington, New Zealand. The Observatory is closed for renovations and refurbishments as of the moment and is set to reopen in early 2010.

The observatory is a base for astronomical observations and research in New Zealand. It was established in 1937 and opened to the public in 1941. The land of the observatory was donated by Charles Rooking Carter who gave it to the Royal Society of New Zealand to create a national observatory in the country.

As part of the efforts to maintain it as one of the country’s topmost observatories, it became the home of three main telescopes. The first telescope is the Ruth Crisp telescope. It is a reflecting telescope that was created by Boller and Chivens who went to the observatory in the 1960s and was financed by philanthropist Ruth Crisp.

The next telescope is the Thomas Cooke telescope, which was named after Thomas Cooke which has a nine and three-fourths inch Cooke Refractor in it. The last telescope is based in the nearby Thomas King Observatory which is made available to the public for stargazing activities.
