The Castel dell'Ovo is a castle that is situated in Southern Italy. The construction is located on a small island of the gulf of Naples, Megaride. This is the place where colonists from Cumae founded the original center of the city in the 6th century BC. In the 1st century BC the Roman patrician Lucius Licinius Lucullus constructed an outstanding villa Castellum Lucullanum on the site. The castle was fortified by Valentinian III in the mid 5th century and this was the place where the last western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was exiled in by Odoacer in the year 476. The castle's name is derived from a medieval legend which believes that the poet Virgil, a great sorcerer, had a magical egg put in the foundations to support them. The strategic location of the castle allows an excellent view of the Naples waterfront and the surrounding area. There is a small causeway that connects the castle. This is a very popular place for newlyweds to have their wedding pictures taken. The causeway is more than 100 meters long. The castle is rectangular, approximately about 200/45 meters and has a high angular stronghold that overlooks the causeway. Inside there are several buildings that are used for exhibitions and various special events. Behind the castle is a long outcrop which was probably used as a docking area.
