Castello is Venice's largest sestieri, extending from the Rialto to Sant'Elena at the eastern trip of the city. The name Castello is believed to derive from a fortress on the island of San Pietro, one of the earliest inhabited sites in the lagoon. The district grew up from the thirteenth century around a naval dockyard on what was originally the Isole Gemini. Castello became divided between the Arsenale (then the largest naval complex in Europe) and the monasteries in the north of the quarter. This was later altered by Napoleon, who planned what are now known as the Bienniale Gardens. Naval History Museum (Museo Storico Navale) - The main building of the museum dates back to the 15th century, it was once the granary of Venice. The ground and the first two floors present the exploits and equipment of the Navy of Venice and of the Italian naval Fleet. The museum is owned by the Italian Navy. Riva degli Schiavoni - The name comes from the word ‘Schiavone’ the Italian word for Slav, which in Venice was linked to the word slave. Slave trading was a common happening in the early life of the city. Most slaves arrived from Dalmatian coastal towns. Many of these slaves were Christian, or converted to the faith, by the 11th century the slave trade in Venice ended. The Arsenale – this was once the largest shipyard in the world. During the 16th century there were about 16.000 people who worked here. The Arsenale had one of the first assembly production lines in the world, it is said that they could construct a galley in a very short time - within a few hours.
