The Castello Sforzesco is a castle in Milan, Italy. It used to be the seat and residence of the ruling family of Milan and now houses several of the city's museums and art collections. The original construction on the castle began in the 14th century. In 1450, Francesco Sforza began reconstruction of the castle; it was later modified by others. Numerous rooms in the castle has intricate internal decoration - the most popular of these being the Sala Delle Asse with surviving ceiling paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. Following the victory of the French in the Battle of Marignanoin 1515, the defeated Massimiliano Sforza, his Swiss armed forces including the cardinal-bishop of Sion retreated into the Castello Sforzesco. However, King Francis I of France following them into Milan ordered his sappers to place mines under the castle's foundations, whereupon the defenders submitted. Restoration work took place on the castle in the 19th century; the work was directed by Luca Beltrami. During the Second World War, the castle suffered heavily as the city of Milan was heavily bombarded by the Allied Forces. The post-war reconstruction work was undertaken by the BBPR architectural partnership. Castello Sforzesco is the popular all over the world because of its art collection which includes Michelangelo's last sculpture, the Rondanini Pietà, Andrea Mantegna's Trivulzio Madonna and Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Trivulzianus manuscript.
