Castle Albrechtsburg Meißen

Hotels near Castle Albrechtsburg Meißen, Meissen, Germany .

The history of Meissen castle goes back to the year 929. During the course of conquering this once Slav region, King Heinrich I created a fortified military camp on a rocky plateau lying high over the River Elbe. It was here that he created a late gothic castle complex, the first palatial castle of its kind in German building history, which was not given the name Albrechtsburg until 1676. The castle was built with painstaking detail and intricate design. Although the castle was built in such a unique style, it was scarcely used for residential purposes, as the two brothers who had commissioned its construction decided in 1485 to split up their lands. August the Strong (August der Starke) had Europe’s first porcelain factory set up here in 1710. The factory occupied all of the castle’s rooms until 1863. Because of its use as a factory, serious damage was inflicted on the building. The factory continued until it was closed in 1863. The castle buildings were repaired and from 1875-1885 a range of murals depicting Saxon history was added. Since 1881, Albrechtsburg Castle has been open to the public as a museum. Albrechtsburg Castle has also been the stage for a varied range of events such as concerts, cabarets, special guided tours, rustic evenings with magic and trickery, open air concerts and medieval festivals on the castle courtyard. Rooms can also be hired in the castle for all kinds of events, such as conferences, receptions, weddings and parties. http://www.albrechtsburg-meissen.de/6.0.html?&L=1
