The Augustusburg castle is located in Saxony near Cologne. Clemens August, the electoral prince and archbishop of Cologne, had many residencies, but Augustusburg Castle in Brohl was the most beautiful of all. The foundation stone for the Augustusburg castle was laid in 1725, amid the ruins of a medieval castle surrounded by water. Today the Rococo masterpiece is one of the greatest creations of its kind. The Augustusburg Castle was valued by UNESCO as the world heritage. This decision was taken in 1984 and draw attention to the castle’s eventful and rich history. The heart of the castle that never fails to catch the eyes of every visitor is the magnificent staircase. The staircase was built according to the plans of the famous architect Balthasar Neumann. Together with his ideas and the skill of the plasterers, he produced one of the highlights of German architecture. Today Augustusburg castle is a historical heritage site that teaches German history and being a well-used place reflects modern life of Germans at the same time.
