Clervaux Castle is situated in the middle of a town which bears the same name “Clervaux” in Vianden, Luxembourg. It is also commonly known as Burg Clerf.
The oldest part of Clervaux Castle was built during the 12th century by Count Gerhard von Sponheim, one of the brothers of the Count of Vianden. During the reign of the Lords of Brandenburg in the 15th century, the castle was enlarged and fortified considerably.
In 1887 the bailey of the castle, which was situated at its south east side, was torn down and its stones were used to build a new house nearby. In 1944 during the ‘Battle of the Bulge’ the castle was burnt to the ground and destroyed. After the Second World War, the State of Luxembourg began to restore the castle to what it is today.
Today the Castle houses the offices of the Local Authority of Clervaux, a museum and a collection of photos about the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. The Castle has a medieval look about it, but the feeling is no longer there.
