No longer a distraught inner city area, Castlefield is now known for its lively outdoor pub scene and other entertainment venues. Once this section of Manchester had fallen into disrepair, but with refurbishment has made its way back Among the major reclamation projects beginning in the 1980’s, was the Castlefield Outdoor Events Arena. The extensive outdoor arena was designed to house major events and annual festivals. The structure is permanently canopied and allows for ample crowds both seated and standing room only. Admittance prices vary depending on the scheduled performance. Castlefield is home to the United Kingdom’s first Urban Heritage Park The park was constructed to convey the rich industrial history that still to this day comprises a proportion of the district. Along with the refurbished Victorian houses and museums surrounding the park, Manchester’s prominent railway viaducts and long standing canal systems are showcased. The Bridgewater Canal will forever retain the title as Britain’s first to be man-made. Further, the world’s oldest railway warehouse can be visited at the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Collected information on this location traces back to Roman settlement circa 79AD.
