Braga which is in northern Portugal is dubbed as the “Portuguese Rome” as this city is a key religious centre in the country. Among the various religious structures in the city, the most important is its Cathedral.

The Cathedral of Braga or simply referred by locals as “Sé” is not just significant in terms of religion but in terms of art and history as well. The cathedral’s construction started during the 11th century and was discontinued many times until it was finally complete after one century. Cathedral of Braga is of Romanesque architecture with its rounded arches and its intricate ornamentations.

The western façade is simpler and rigid with two twin towers. In the middle is a larger than life statue of the Virgin and the Child Jesus. The interior is well decorated with tall strong pillars, the statue of Our Lady of the Milk in which Mary is nursing the infant Jesus can be found.

There are also traces and presence of Baroque in its interiors like its high choir. The stalls are sculptured and the high choir has high painted ceilings. It also has an 18th-century guilded organ. On the second floor of the cathedral are the Cathedral Treasury and the Museum of Sacred Arts. Admission fee for the treasury and museum is 2€.

Cathedral of Braga is open from 8:30am till 6:30 pm during summer and from 8:30am till 5:30pm during winter. The people and locals of Braga are known for their conservatism and piousness; visitors are advised to be tactful in their deeds and appearance when inside the cathedral.
