Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

Hotels near Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Moscow, Russia .

The present Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow is a new 21st century structure and the perfect replica of the old Cathedral that was demolished during Stalinís reign in Russia. Situated in the banks of the famous Moska River, the cathedral is just a few blocks away from the well-visited Red Square.

The original cathedral was built in honor of Christ who saved Russia and its people during the conquest of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was first finished in 1869 as had Constantinopleís Hagia Sophia as its model. It was adored with paintings and in the cathedral the famous 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky debuted. However as mentioned earlier, the first Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was dynamited and demolished. What were left of its ruins were its high reliefs that are not preserved and displayed in a monastery.

Rebuilding of the Cathedral started in 1990 with massive support from the locals. The new cathedral is an astonishing perfect accuracy of the old and original cathedral. It may lost some of its timeless treasures like paintings and sculptures but the current cathedral of its striking golden dome reminds how Russia was saved.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is open daily from 6:30am to 10pm while taking any photograph inside the premises is strictly prohibited.
