The Cathedral of Intercession of the Virgin of the Moat in Moscow is more commonly known to many people as St. Basil’s Cathedral. When the Russians triumphed over the Tatars, it happened to be the feast of the Intercession of the Virgin and Ivan the Terrible, their ruler wanted to construct a cathedral dedicated to the Virgin. There was also a moat beside the Kremlin, which added to its name “on the moat”. St. Basil was also highly favored by the Russian king.

Construction started in the 16th century and now it is one of the most most-photographed and visited attraction in the famous Red Square of Moscow. St. Basil’s Cathedral as it more commonly called is noted for its 9 colorful domes and a spire. It is inspired by the Muslim mosque to symbolize the victory of the Russian’s against the Muslim opponents. The 9 domes represent the number of attacks that Ivan led against his enemies.

There are 9 chapels in the cathedral and its walls are covered with geometric and floral patterns. It is open for visitors from 11am to 6pm except Tuesdays and every first Monday of the month. The cathedral is a Greek Orthodox cathedral and visitors are advised to observe discretion.

Hotels and other facilities surrounding the Red Square are obviously pricey since it is the centre of Russia’s capital. Outside the Red Square they are cheaper especially the hotel rates but facilities and amenities are not of the highest standards. Those who prefer more than basic services should choose those luxurious hotels instead.
