While visiting Magdeburg, travelers can simply look up towards the sky to catch a glimpse of the highest cathedral in East German. With a height of 104 meters, the Cathedral of Magdeburg impressively stands in the city with a birth date some 1,200 years ago.

The Cathedral's construction goes almost as far back as the city's origins. In 936, Emperor Otto the First founded a monastery dedicated to Saint Maurice. By 955, the monastery was transformed into a Romanesque Basilica. Much of the church would be rebuilt due to a fire in 1207.

The Cathedral of Madgeburg sits today in the name of Saint Maurice and Saint Catherine. Visitors can go on a guided tour of the expansive church at 2:00PM. Emperor Otto the First was buried in the Cathedral. Visitors on the tour have to opportunity to view his tomb.

The doors remain open May through September from 10:00AM until 6:00PM. From April through October, the church is open from 10:00Am until 5:00Pm and November through March, hours go from 10:00AM-4:00PM.

Located at Am Dom 1, travelers can conveniently take tram lines 2, 9, and 10, getting off at Domplatz to marvel at the Cathedral.
