The Cathedral of Monreale in Palermo, Italy is one of the finest attractions in the Sicilian region and also considered as a national monument in Italy. Located in the famed Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, this 12th-century Norman structure is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The cathedral is celebrated not just for its religious importance but for its artistic attributes. It is the best Norman cathedral and it combines both Western and Eastern. It is a good example of a Romanesque Byzantine blend.

The exteriors of the Cathedral of Monreale is rather simpler compared to other European cathedrals but it has bronze doors with sculpted reliefs and some paintings. The said doors are of Romanesque style.

The simplicity of the cathedral’s exteriors is quite opposite of the grandeur of its interiors. The Cathedral’s interior is laid with mosaics from its walls to its naves. The mosaics are also golden in color and run a total of 68,220 sq. feet, second to that of Constantinople’s Hagia Sophia. The rest of the interiors are richly decorated with church ornaments. Outside the church in its cloister, visitors can see the Arabian arches and the reliefs with Romanesque figures.

Cathedral of Monreale is open for visitors daily from 8am to 6pm. The cloister is open every Mondays to Saturdays (9am-noon and 5:30pm-7:30pm) and during Sundays and holidays (9am-1:30pm). A small amount is collected if visitors want to see the cathedral’s cloister (4.50€), treasury (2.05€) and its terraces (1.55€). Visitors are likewise free to take photographs anywhere in the cathedral.
