Cathédral Notre-Dome de Chartres belongs to the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites since 1979 with its faultless preservation of all its original details and design. Located in the centre of the medieval town of Chartres which is 50 miles from the capital city of Paris in France, the cathedral is also a pilgrimage destination since Middle Ages.

Aside from its grandeur and holistic beauty, the cathedral houses the tunic of the Blessed Mother which was given by Charlemagne himself from one of his conquests in Jerusalem. The said relic is the main reason why pilgrims flock to this cathedral year after year.

This Gothic cathedral was built from the 12th to the 13th century after the earlier church was severely destroyed by fires. At present, after careful preservation, the cathedral is still looks exactly what is looks like centuries ago.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres has elegant spires and towers that reach up to 105 meters while its portals filled with intricate carvings and sculptures. Statues of The Blessed Virgin, Saints and other biblical features adorn its interiors. Its stained glass windows depict many scenes from the Bible and add beauty and lightning to the cathedral. It also has a medieval labyrinth.

The cathedral has a small gift shop for visitors to buy some souvenir items to bring back home. Photography is permitted except when there is a service happening inside the cathedral. Visitors can come daily from 8:30am to 7:30pm. Guided tours are available for those who want to visit the crypt except during holidays and Sundays. Labyrinth is open for tours only during Fridays and visitors can be accommodated to climb the towers not later than 5:30pm.
