One of the most distinctive buildings visitors notice when walking around historic Charleston is the large church built in a distinctly different architectural style than the surrounding historical houses over on Broad Street. That building is The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, the mother church of The Roman Catholic Diocese in both Charleston and the state of South Carolina in general.

The church has existed previously in different incarnations. The currently standing building has been around since the 1860s, when a huge city-wide fire took down the original brownstone cathedral. A number of original touches still exist, including an impressive and famous organ as well as beautiful stained-glass windows.

The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist holds over 700 worshipers, and is open for services, though if you're interested in viewing the stained glass windows, it might be possible to pop inside for a quick look. The parish office is open on weekdays from nine until four.
