Locally known as the Trierer Dom or Trierer Cathedral, it is the oldest cathedral in Germany and since 1986 it belongs to the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. Aside from being the oldest German cathedral, it receives millions of pilgrims as it houses the Holy Robe that is believed to be the same garment that Christ wore during his Crucifixion.

The Holy Robe was given by Empress Helena, now St. Helena who was a devoted Christian and was fond of collecting Holy relics from her pilgrimages. A wooden shrine that is located behind the main altar houses the Holy Robe which can be seen on certain occasions but the Holy Robe cannot be viewed. Aside from the Holy Robe, the Holy Nail can also be found inside the cathedral’s treasury.

Cathedral of Saint Peter was built by the great Holy Roman Emperor Constantine on the same site of his mother, St. Helena’s palace. The construction of the cathedral was also to mark his 20th year as emperor. Later additions were made in the 5th, 9th and succeeding centuries and with that, the cathedral has Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque features.

The cathedral is open for visitors daily. From April to October, it is open from 6am to 6pm and from November to March, from 6am to 4:30am. Taking photos is permitted.
