Cathedral of St. Martin is located in Lucca, a city in Tuscany in the northern-central region of Italy. Hence, it is also known as Lucca Cathedral. The cathedral has both Romanesque and Gothic features and was rebuilt in the 12th and 13th century after the original church built way back in the 8th century was destroyed.

The cathedral has a well-decorated façade that includes a statue of St. Martin and three 13th century arches. The portico is laid with intricate reliefs and sculptures. It also has its columnar-inspired cloisters and a giant bell tower. More than its architectural beauty, Cathedral of St. Martin is well-visited due to an interesting object inside that pilgrims venerate.

Inside the cathedral is an octagonal temple has the Sacred Countenance or the Volto Santo di Lucca. The Sacred Countenance is a sculpted crucifix of Christ in a long garment made from cedar wood. It is said that the man who sculpted the cross is Nicodemus, the same man who helped Jesus Christ in putting him down from the cross during his Crucifixion. Pilgrims believe that the image of Christ of that crucifix bears the exact resemblance of Christ himself.

Aside from the Sacred Countenance, The Cathedral of St. Martin has a 12th century labyrinth and impressive medieval reliefs.

Lucca is a pleasant city with quaint shops, restaurants and cafes. Hotels are usually family run with cozy ambiance. The city provides good venue to visitors to relax and unwind.
