The cathedral is the main center of gathering of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and it is the oldest parish in Fort Wayne regardless of denomination, having been founded in 1836.

The cathedral building includes two towering front-end spires and an enormous, ornate facade built mainly from limestone with copper and glass included to give the structure a little sophistication. Such is the beauty and the historical significance of the cathedral that it has been added to the National Register of Historical Places.
