Cathedral Square is the heart of Christchurch’s Central Business District (CBD). It takes its name from the fact that it sits in front of the Christchurch Cathedral, which is an Anglican Cathedral. The square was originally planned to be called Ridley Square in honor of Nicholas Ridley. Landmarks and features found in Cathedral Square include ‘The Chalice’ and the sculpture of Robert Godley.

The square was developed in the 1860s. For many years, it served as an intersection, but at present, Cathedral Square is mostly pedestrian. It is noted for being the venue of several gatherings. Cathedral Square is also frequented by street performers and all sorts of speakers. It is also a popular lunching area for people working nearby.
