The Cavan and Leitrim Railway at one point in time was the busiest of Ireland's narrow-gauge railways. Due to its proximity to a coalfield, the railway stayed open years after other 3 feet gauge railways closed down.

Visitors that want a ride on some of Cavan and Leitrim's old locomotives can visit the Railway Saturday through Monday. Saturdays and Mondays, the Cavan and Leitrim Railway remains open for tours from 10:00Am until 5:30Pm. On Sundays, visitors can receive a tour from 1:00PM until 5:30PM.

Tours of the railway last around 40 minutes. There is plenty to see on the tour which includes a trip on the train, a tour of the engine shed and workshops, along with an overview of the entire railway.

A gift shop now rests in the old booking office where visitors can buy souvenirs, postcards, books and videos relating to the Cavan and Leitrim Railway. The railway is located in Dromod, about 12 miles from Longford.
