Central Pier Blackpool is the biggest of the three piers located in Blackpool, England. Impressed by the success of the existing North Pier, the Blackpool South Jetty Company decided to hire the same contractor Richard Laidlaw to build another one. It was inaugurated on 30 of May 1868 under the management of Robert Bickerstaffe. It is made mostly of cast iron with wooden decking and the materials and building techniques were thus similar to those used for North Pier but the structure of Central is a little more delicate in appearance. Despite the two fires in 1964 and 1973, the pier has suffered little damage. Nevertheless, the theatre buildings had to be restored several times. In 1990 the Ferris wheel was added to the pier which made it so very much interesting.
The pier is an excellent place to entertain since it offers services to all family members, no matter the age. The main attractions are: Trevor Chance's Legends, Central Pier fair, Central Pier Family Bar and Old Time Portrait Studio. At the front of the pier an amusement arcade provides the latest gaming machines and attractions, from roller-derby to hi-tech simulators. The pier has hosted fabulous concerts of many performers as Robbie Williams, Freddie Mercury, Neil Diamond, George Michael, Diana Ross, John Lennon, Buddy Holly and David Bowie. The Central Pier can be visited every day between 09.00 and 17.00 and the admission is free.
