The mail railway station of Florence is located in the center of the city. The station is known as Firenze Santa Maria Novella. This is the main national and international train station in Florence, Italy. The station is at the northern end of Florence–Rome direttissima and the southern end of Bologna–Florence Direttissima. The station consists of 19 platforms in total and it is estimated that every year more than 59,000,000 people use this central station of Florence.
The structure of this railway station was designed in the year 1932 by the Tuscan Group and the construction work was finished within the year 1934. The same year, this station was inaugurated and opened for everyone. The plan of this railway station was developed under the theme of Mussolini’s fascist movement. This station was designed in order to replace the old Leopolda station and act as the gateway to the center of the city. The station is considered to be one of the most important architectural landmarks in Italy.
A tourist information office is situated just outside the station and there are plenty of ATF bus stops nearby as well. Hotels like Alamanni hotel, Hotel Embassy, Hotel Londra, Hotel Erina are within a kilometer from the station. One can travel to cities like Pisa, Empoli, and Bologna availing the train. The Pisa airport is only at an hour’s distance from the station and these two are connected by six trains a day. The Florence city center is just at ten minute’s walking distance from the station.
