Central West End St. Louis, Missouri, is an area which runs from Union Boulevard to the western edge of Midtown and bordering Forest Park. Known for its concentration of free cultural institutions, Central West End features such iconic spots as Fullerton's Westminster Place, Washington Terrace, and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Fullerton's Westminster Place is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its large, architecturally-distinctive houses built mostly between 1890 and 1910, and is known as one of the most remarkable streetscapes in all of the United States. The Cathedral Basilica is well-known for its collection of mosaics, which happens to be the largest in the world. The adjacent Forest Park is a beloved, verdant haven in the middle of a bustling city, and was the historic site of the 1904 World's Fair. Other public facilities in the area include the St. Louis Children's Hospital, the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Saint Louis Public Library Schlafly Branch, the U.S. Postal Service Branch, and the Central West End MetroLink Station. The district has also been called home by several American celebrities, including playwright Tennessee Williams, poet T.S. Eliot, writer William S. Burroughs, and was the setting of stories which were made into the classic movie Meet Me in St. Louis.
