Petite-France is an area of Strasbourg, Alsace, France. The sweet sounding name was actually not derived from the best intentions. The most commonly found reason is that a hospital was established in the 16th century to treat those suffering from syphilis, which was nicknamed the "French disease". To a lesser extent, but not any more flattering, is that during the middle ages, the many prostitutes inhabiting the area were known to German residents as working the "French business".

Petite-France is located on the Main Island or Grand Island ("Grande Ile"), which stands to the left side of the Rhine, on the Ill River in Alsace. Due to the island's shape, it is sometimes referred to as "ellipse insulaire". The Grand Ile is the sight of four centuries old churches, to wit: St. Thomas; St. Pierre-le-Vieux; St. Pierre-le-Jeune; St. Etienne. However, the nearby Strasbourg Cathedral is a much bigger draw.

Once having been the world's tallest building, the Strasbourg Cathedral remains today as the sixth highest church. This first cathedral of Alsace began construction in the 11th century and renovations at the end of the 12th century. It now stands as a monument to European gothic architecture. From the Cathedral's top platform, some see as far as the Black Forest. Visitors are welcomed every day except Christmas and New Year's Day. Closing times vary depending upon the month and weather. Adult admission to the Cathedral platform is 3.00 Euros.
