Chamizal National Memorial was created in 1968 by Congress to commemorate the treaty of 1963 which ended the border dispute between the U.S and Mexico.

A border was originally established as the Rio Grande itself in 1848’s Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. However, as time passed and the river slowly changed course, Mexico ended up with less land than it originally had. In 1963, President Kennedy sought to end tensions and settle the matter, signing a treaty with Mexican President Mateos.

Today the memorial park is a cultural center which sits on 55 acres and has art galleries and theaters as well as an amphitheater. The Park itself is open daily 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. The Visitor Center and Los Paisanos Gallery stay open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 5. The memorial is closed Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day. Admission is free to visitors. The Chamizal Theater may be rented for private use. In addition, groups of 50 or more may rent the camp grounds for $50 a day. There is also a walking trail at Cordova Island for hiking and bird-watching.
