Chapultepec Forest is the wide circle of park area surrounding Chapultepec Hill, a key spot in Mexico City’s past and present. Over 1600 acres of land are included in this massive park area, which was settled by Aztecs nearly 1,000 years ago. An important landmark within the forest is the Chapultepec Castle, where the Museo Nacional de Historia is located. Formerly the presidential palace as well as the imperial residence of Maximilian I and the Empress Carlota, the castle is a must on any Mexico City tour. There are several hiking trails and small lakes within the park, as well as the Chapultepec Zoo. The Modern Art Museum and Natural History Museum are both on park grounds.
