As a city filled with so many historical landmarks, it's no wonder that The Charleston County Library also has a rich story behind its existence. The main library for the city until 1998, the library was opened in 1931, though it has undergone relocation from its original historic building to its modern home over on King Street.

For those hoping to actually check out some books while in town, the best bet is to head over to the new main library, which is only a couple of blocks away at 68 Calhoun Street. A bustling modern library, this new main library has almost half a million items in circulation.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from nine in the morning until nine at night, on Friday and Saturday from nine in the morning until six in the evening, and on Sundays from two until five. Tech-savvy travelers will be relieved to find that there's Wi-Fi available, too.
