Not just the first museum in Charleston, but the first museum built in America, The Charleston Museum was founded in 1773, and is still in operation today, after undergoing a number of changes over the years. It's conveniently located in the city's historic downtown district, near a number of quaint cafes and exciting streets.

The museum's collection is mostly dedicated to remnants of history, including decorative arts, natural history displays, and even objects from the museum's beginnings. For fans of southern debutante culture, the collection of fine silver alone is worth the trip. Nature fans will also delight at the exhibits devoted to birds and other animals found only in the region.

In addition to the museum proper with its collection, The Charleston Museum also is in charge of two historic homes that have been turned into museums: The Heyward-Washington house, home of one of Charleston's most famous patriots, and The Joseph Manigault House, famous for its distinct architecture and a level of preservation unseen amongst other regal mansions of the rice boom.

Open seven days a week, with more limited hours on Sundays, The Charleston Museum is a great idea for adults, as well as children, thanks to a hands-on exhibit space that keeps youngsters occupied. Since it's located right in the heart of the historic downtown, a number of different hotel options are right nearby, including The Francis Marion Hotel, The King George IV Inn.and The Hampton Inn Charleston Historic District.
