For a variety of destinations around the country, the Charlottesville Amtrak Station is a key hub in the mid-south Atlantic region. Known locally as Charlottesville Union Station (Amtrak code CVS) and located in central Virginia, Charlottesville serves as a stop on the Cardinal Hoosier line (from New York to Chicago via Virginia), the Crescent line (from New York to New Orleans via South Carolina and Georgia) and the Northeast Regional line (down the east coast from Massachusetts to Virginia).

Originally built in 1885 for local railroads, the station was revamped in 1915 to handle larger baggage loads and eventually in 1997 became a key stop on the Amtrak routes. It is located at 810 West Main Street. Station hours are from 6:00 am to 9:30 pm seven days a week. Help with baggage, baggage check services, ticket windows and electronic ticketing are all available during station hours.

Charlottesville is known for its university environment, with many outdoor concerts and art shows occurring throughout the year.
