The 16th century Château d’Azay-le-Rideau is one of the earliest examples of French Renaissance-style chateaux. It lies on the Ludre River in the centre of France, some 27 kilometers from Tours. This castle also stands on a natural moat.

It was first built by Gilles Berthelot who was a governor general of the kingdom’s finances. With his wife, they transformed a simple chateau into a grand palace filled with many features from the Renaissance architecture. However, due to the political downfall of Berthelot, the chateau fell into different owners until the French government possessed it and restored the medieval castle.

Now, the Centro des Monuments Nationaux or Centre of National Monuments manages Château d’Azay-le-Rideau. Visitors will marvel at its decorative sculptures, tapestries, high roofs, symmetrical façade and tall watch turrets.

Guided tours are only available in French. Admission fee is 8.50€ for adults and free for children below 18. Citizens of 27 European Union member states as well as non-European permanent residents of France can visit the chateau for free.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau is open from October-March (10am-12:30pm and 2pm-5:30pm), April-June and September ( 9:30am-6pm) and July to August ( 9:30am-7pm). It is closed every January 1st, May 1st and December 25th.
