Now open as a public museum, the Chateau Sur-Mer was the first of the Bellevue Avenue mansions to be constructed in Newport, Rhode Island. This grand residence represents the Gilded Age in Newport, a time in which wealthy residents threw extravagant parties in their luxurious homes. The home was originally built for William Shepard Wetmore and was completed in 1852. The Chateau Sur-Mer architecture reflects its original Victorian design, as well as a Second Empire style which was the product of a remodeling in the 1870s. It is situated on 17 acres of property and was built as a year-round residence.
