Chattanooga Choo Choo

Hotels near Chattanooga Choo Choo, Chattanooga, United States .

The site of the former Terminal Station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo still hold trains as the center of its focus. Built in 1908 at 1400 Market Street, the former Southern Railway station received trains from 1909 until 1970. In 1973, the station was transformed into a vacation complex with hotels, exhibits, restaurants, entertainment and an actual former New Orleans trolley car which covers the 24 acres of grounds.

This unique landmark has been a Holiday Inn Hotel for decades, but is transforming into a Historic Hotels of America as it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2009. Guests in the hotel actually stay in rooms built into former railway cars. In addition, the best restaurant on the grounds, “Dinner in the Diner,” is a former luxury railway car from the 1940s.

Besides the exhibits and sights from the classic era of rail travel there are a number of shops and cafes at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. It is a popular place for conventions, for dining out and parties like the New Year’s Celebration. What was once a famous song -- the Choo Choo -- has survived beyond the form of the actual train and turned into an original southern phenomenon.

Guests should take advantage of the classic rail car hotel rooms. For additional information or to book in advance go to http://www.choochoo.com/. Nearby accommodations also include the Chattanoogan Resort Spa on South Broad Street or the Marriott on Carter Plaza.
