Checkpoint Charlie was a nickname given to a crossing point between East and West Germany in the Berlin Wall. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and Germany was reunified later, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction. All buildings on the site were torn down in the year 2000.

In 2006, an open-air exhibit where Checkpoint Charlie used to be was opened to the public. There is information on historical attempts at escaping through the checkpoint, expansion of the checkpoint, and information on the face-off between Soviet and American tanks during the Cold War in 1961. Actors at the site dressed as Allied military policeman are available for photographs with tourists (for a fee). Souvenir stands and stores are also found in the Checkpoint Charlie area.
