On the banks of the Demerara River, 40 kilometers south of the capitol of Georgetown, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) is the primary air travel and transport hub of Guyana. Cheddi Jagan is a public airport, serving commercial, cargo, and general aviation air traffic, and was formerly known as Timehri International Airport.

The airport was initially constructed as a part of Allied defense efforts in World War II under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement between the United States and Great Britain. By 1948, the base was deemed unnecessary, and converted into a public airport, with a modern terminal being completed in 1952. Cheddi Jagan International Airport is serviced by multiple international carriers, including Delta Airlines, Caribbean Airlines Limited, Blue Wing Airlines, and META Airlines. These carriers provide regular service to Barbados, Miami, New York City, Port of Spain, and Toronto, amongst other destinations. The airport handles over 200,000 passengers annually, and has 6 ground level gates, serviced by a single terminal, and also services cargo carriers FedEx Express and ABX Air.
