Chemnitz Opera

The Chemnitz Opera is an opera company and opera house located in the German city of Chemnitz.

The building construction took three years, between 1906 and 1909, and was constructed by a design of the German architect Richard Mobius. The building located on Theaterplatz square was destroyed during the World War II and reconstructed between 1947 and 1951. After its renovation during 1988-1992, when the Wilhelminian era façade was retained while the interior of the auditorium and the stage were changed, the building became one of the most modern opera houses in Europe. The building can host up to 714 peoples, the seats being divided into Orchestra, Balcony and Boxes seating. The interior of the opera house is not very rich, avoiding over-ornate Semperian splendor.

The opera continues to stage Richard Wagner’s operas or music dramas and offers traditional works from a new point of view. One of the most ambitious and successful projects was the production of the entire “Ring of the Nibelungen”, which follows successful production of Wagner’s “Tannhauser”, “Parsifal”, and “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg”. The Opera also performs operettas and musicals and the entertainment offer is further enhanced by high quality ballet and dance performances.

The Theaterplatz square, the place where the Chemnitz opera is located, is used for open air concerts and concerts of the Philharmonic Orchestra that attract thousands of people during the summer.

Bus 32 or tram 2 or 5 reach Theaterplatz, so the transportation is not a problem for the culture-loving peoples.
