The Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport or CTU is a major airport situated in the north of Shuangliu County approximately 16 kilometers southwest of Chengdu’s downtown area. At one point, the airport achieved the distinction of being the busiest airport in Western China, as well as being the 6th busiest airport all over the country in terms of passenger traffic.

Founded in 1938, the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport was first known as the Shuangguisi Aiport and consisted of an area big enough for small biplanes to land and take off. Eventually, expansions were made so that the airport may be able to take on bigger planes that come its way. On May 12, 2008, the airport had suffered some minor damages during the Sichuan Earthquake, and was temporarily shut down. However, it was quickly reopened after the runway was inspected for possible problems. The quick reopening of the airport played a huge part during the aftermath of the earthquake as it made the facilitation of rescue work in the area possible.
