Chester Racecourse

One of the very old race courses in England which is still being used is Chester Racecourse. The other name of this racecourse is Roodee.

It is also one of the smallest racecourses in England and the horse racing game had been played since sixteenth century in this Chester Racecourse. The area covered by this race course is about 65 acres and it is located on the banks of the River Dee.

Once during the Romans period, the Chester Racecourse was used as harbor. But later when the navigation was made impossible due to the river silting, the harbor was closed. The racecourse was named as Roodee as there was a raised mound decorated as a small cross at the center of the area. The small cross is called as rood and hence its name which means Island of Cross.

Before 1677, the Chester Racecourse was actually the home of Chester Midsummer Watch Parade. But later it was completely demolished in the year 1677. One of the popular Goteddsday football match was once hosted in this racecourse. But due to the violence in the game, it was later banned in the year 1533 and was replaced with this horse racing game in 1539.
