Chester Zoo, located in Chester, northwest England, is the largest zoo in United Kingdom. It was first opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and his family. The zoo which receives no government funding is currently managed by the North of England Zoological Society. In 2007 it was described by Forbes as one of the best fifteen zoos in the world.
Chester Zoo holds approximately 7,000 animals representing over 400 different species. The zoo is permanently concerned on developing the highest standards of conservation and care of its animals and plants, making a real contribution to saving them from extinction. Their Andes Garden shows the terrain and range of plants from the mountains of the Andes, Glorious Grasses along the Fountain Lawn and canal highlights the usefulness and diversity of the Grass family. The gardens are famous because they reflect different regions and type of plants, many of which are rare or extinct and show the natural habitats of some of our most exotic species. The zoo offers many places for food and drinking. There are some cafes and restaurants inside but also outside providing a unique experience when eating in a real African atmosphere. Goods and souvenirs can be provided from their various shops.
In January 2009, Chester Zoo unveiled an ambitious £225 million plan. It will see the zoo transformed into the largest conservation, animal and leisure attraction of its kind in Europe. The project includes two phases: the first one involves a £90 million for building the only domed ecosystem in the UK. The second one presumes building a 90-room hotel, a conservation College and a revamped main entrance linking to a marina development on zoo land beside the Shopshire Union Canal.
